The media’s representation of women is horrendous. It always portrays weaknesses or criticises women’s looks. Women are seen as objects not humans in the media world. This is the main gender inequality issue that every woman combats today.
I can’t believe how little women are presented as being empowered or shown to have importance in the media. It is not right. Its about time women stand up for equality to stop this gender battle . Allowing whatever gender you are to not impact every aspect of life!
Unlike any other female celebrity who would shy away from confronting women’s rights, Emma Watson has made a stand. She has just been given a major new role. It’s nothing to do with her acting career. After completing her degree at Brown University, the actress has been appointed UN Women Goodwill Ambassador.
She states “Women’s rights are something so inextricably linked with who I am, so deeply personal and rooted in my life, that I can’t imagine an opportunity more exciting.”
She launched the HeForShe campaign in September 2014, a campaign which is aimed at motivating men and boys to push for gender equality.
Although this is a strong femimist campaign which empowers all women, it still has hints of gender equality even within in it. Yes focusing towards men to help make them aware of gender equality and how they can combat it. However the fact that its aimed to help defeat gender inequality, still enforces the ideolgie that men are powerful and women always need them to become successful.
Emma gave a speech at the United Nations about Gender inequality. The video of her speech has been viewed over 7 million times on YouTube showing how media has allowed her to spread awareness.
After her amazing speech inspired many to stand up to gender equality, others turned against her.She experienced a horrific incident last year when she was trolled and threatened for speaking about feminism. This clearly shows our fearful society today.
When a woman is trying to make the world a more fair and equal place, why should she receive threats? Anyone who wants peace should be allowed to strive to achieve it. Soon as people hear the word “feminism” there’s always a flurry of outrage. Things need to change.
Due to the lack of coverage of feminism through the media it is seen as a controversial thing. It is surrounded by a bubble of misunderstood views, causing people to fear it or avoid it.
As a successful woman you wouldn’t think Emma would have been a victim of gender equality. But she said that “I have experienced sexism in that I have been directed by male directors 17 times and only twice by women,” highlighting the inequalities that exist for females working in movies.
This still shows how gender inequality is still current. It isn’t as obvious but it is still lurking in every women’s life. The Harry Potter star then goes onto say that her main problem comes from “the media, where I have been treated so incredibly differently from my male co-stars.”
She states that “I think it is right that I should be able to make decisions about my own body.” It blows your mind how women in the 20th century still feel as if their bodies are being exploited. That they have no say in their own look. This is the effect of the media,
Emma is an inspiration to every woman. Its great to see someone having the guts to stand up and make a change and to have the strong passion and determination to carry on the fight for equality.
